2009 Challenge

Do you have…

  • A piece of fabric in your stash that you’re afraid to cut because it’s just too pretty to use?

  • A small piece of fabric leftover from a project that is too small to do anything with but you can’t throw it away because you love it so much?

  • A fabric you’ve been lusting over at the quilt shop because you love the colors but don’t have a clue how you’d use it in a quilt?

Now’s your time to use it! Well not really, that’s the challenge!!

CHALLENGE QUILTS WILL BE REVEALED AT OUR FIRST MEETING IN SEPTEMBER, 2009!!!!!

EVERYONE CAN PLAY!!

WE'RE CHALLENGING EVERYONE TO KEEP THE CREATIVE JUICES FLOWING!!

RULES OF THE CHALLENGE (there has to be rules)

  • #1 RULE: HAVE FUN!!!  Since this is not for a quilt show year your items will not be judged, just admired by all of us and fun for you. We would like as many people that can to participate. We’re challenging you to keep the creative juices flowing. Of course if you want to make an item that you can enter into the 2010 show in the wall, lap or quilt exhibit, it is up to you on what you create. We just want you to have fun.

  • Find a piece of fabric that has colors you love and pull fabrics from your stash or buy fabrics (if you must) that match the colors in the original fabric you picked.

  • HERE’S THE CHALLENGE…You can’t use the original fabric you used to pull your other fabric colors IN your item!!! You can use any or all of the colors in your inspiration fabric but not that piece of fabric. Your original piece of fabric can be used on the back to show where you got your color inspiration but it can’t be used on the front. You do not have to use all of the colors in that original fabric, but make sure you use at least some of them. The piece of original fabric you chose is your color inspiration.

  • Item Selection: You can make your choice of challenge item, such as quilt (any size), wall hanging, tote bag, pocket book, vest, jacket, penny rug, crazy quilt, etc.  Finished size is your choice. Since this is not a quilt show year we are not limiting the size of your creation. It’s up to you.

  • Methods of Construction: You are free to use whatever construction or quilting methods work best for your creation (i.e., machine piece, hand piece, paper piece, applique, etc.). Your creation can be as complicated or as simple as you like. You don’t have to step out of your comfort zone if you want to use a purchased pattern or a simple block pattern. Everyone can play. But don’t feel stressed, this is for fun.

  • Fabric Requirement: There is no limit to the total number of fabrics or kinds of fabrics used but you must have representation of most of the colors from your original inspiration fabric. The challenge is your fabric choices and how you use them. Embellishments are optional.

  • Due Date: First guild meeting in September, 2009. We will reveal them during Show & Tell. If you haven’t used your inspiration fabric on the back (even a small piece), please bring a piece with you so we can see where you got your color choices.  We also understand that life gets in the way of our quilting sometimes so if you don’t completely finish your item that’s OK. We’d love to see your UFO. HAVE FUN!!!!!!

Our goal is simple -

To provide an atmosphere which nurtures us as quiltmakers.
