2008 Challenge

The 2008 Herring Run Quilt Show is our 10th show!!! To celebrate the anniversary the theme of our guild challenge is TEN! Your challenge creation does not have to have the number TEN on it (unless that’s what you want), but must represent TEN. It can have ten blocks, ten items, ten fabrics, ten of anything. We urge you to let your imagination go wild and for you to HAVE FUN!!

ITEMS ENTERED IN THE CHALLENGE WILL BE DISPLAYED AT OUR SEPT. 20-21, 2008 QUILT SHOW!

BASIC RULES OF THE CHALLENGE:

TEN: When looking at your challenge creation we must recognize TEN somewhere. It can be the number ten, one square with ten items on it, scattered items that add up to ten, items in groups of ten, made out of ten squares or shapes, ten different fabrics, whatever you think represents TEN. We must be able to see the idea of TEN at least once on your item. Use your imagination! Your creation can be traditional or contemporary.

Item Selection: You can make your choice of challenge item, such as wall hanging, tote bag, pocket book, vest, jacket, penny rug, crazy quilt, etc. HAVE FUN!

Methods of Construction: You are free to use whatever construction or quilting methods work best for your creation (i.e., machine piece, hand piece, paper piece, etc.). We encourage you to challenge yourself and be creative.

Embellishments: Embellishments are optional.

Quilting Requirement: We would like you to create this item yourself, so no professional quilting unless you own your own long-arm machine.

Finished Size: Finished size is your choice, but no smaller than 12” and no bigger than 180” outside perimeter/circumference (i.e., square, rectangle, hexagon, circle). For example, a square that equals 180” would be 45”x45”. If your item is larger than the 180” total size you will be disqualified. We know you can’t measure the perimeter/circumference of a jacket, vest or pocketbook so those will be accepted at any size, just be reasonable. Space is limited at the quilt show.

Fabric Requirement: There is no limit to the total number of fabrics or kinds of fabrics used, unless you’ve decided that your representation of TEN is ten fabrics.

Hanging Sleeve: The quilt back must have a 5” hanging sleeve. If you are creating a jacket or vest, please provide a hanger for hanging it.

Label: Make sure you put a label with your name on the back of the item. Give credit to the source that inspired you.

Due Date: First guild meeting in September, 2008 for judging by your quilt guild peers.

Our goal is simple -

To provide an atmosphere which nurtures us as quiltmakers.
